The ENYAQ iV electric SUV represents the evolution of the ŠKODA design language both on the macro level and in details like headlights. Petr Nevřela, head of exterior lighting design, gives us an insight into the basic ideas that lie behind the lights design.

The future combined with tradition

For designers, a brand new car with an innovative concept was an opportunity to create details that will set the ENYAQ iV apart from other ŠKODA models and bring the carmaker’s design language into the future, while remaining true to the tradition of Czech design.

The lights on the ENYAQ iV are one of these details. “The design of the ENYAQ iV’s lights is alluring and friendly. What’s more, its headlights have a dynamic feel and very modern look,” says Petr Nevřela, adding that it was clear from the start that ŠKODA’s first fully electric SUV will get headlights with state-of-the-art full LED matrix technology.

So what do the lights look like? “There is a very subtle part for daytime lights with stylised ‘eyelashes’, and the main LED modules have a hexagonal shape,” Nevřela reveals. In his opinion, the front and rear lights give the ENYAQ iV’s appearance an innovative feel. Having said that, the design is not a radical departure from the current appearance of other ŠKODA models. “We already entered a new phase in the evolution of lights design with the SCALA, KAMIQ and OCTAVIA models,” Nevřela mentions.

Czech crystal

The headlights on ŠKODA cars are currently more slender than in the past, which gives them a more dynamic expression. Elements referencing the tradition of Czech crystal are now par for the course. “The precise lines, geometric arrangement and especially shining glass surfaces will charm the eye, and new details become apparent from every different angle of observation and under changing light conditions,” says Nevřela, describing the principle of the crystalline design of the headlights that is a hallmark of ŠKODA cars and will grace the new ENYAQ iV as well.

Nevřela promises understated but playful light effects. With the rear lights, for example, these take the form of subtle lines that enhance the three-dimensional appearance. Nevřela views lights design as a dynamic and gradual process, in which his team comes up with ideas and consults these with technical development and the exterior design team. Gradually, the final appearance of the lights takes shape out of these discussions.
