World Champions Once Again!

World Champions Once Again!

What’s it like to be the best in the world? The ŠKODA Motorsport racing team can answer this question from its own experience. So, too, can driver Pontus Tidemand, who, together with his co-driver Jonas Andersson, has won the world championship title in category WRC 2.

The ŠKODA Motorsport racing team once again this season won the championship title – this time already after completing the Rallye Deutschland, fully three races prior to the end of the season. The success in Germany for the Czech auto brand was in fact multiplied by the fact that the ŠKODA Motorsport team also won the Team Championship in WRC 2.

Contributing, too, to the excellent outcome was the performance of drivers Jan Kopecký and Pavel Dresler, who have long been gunning for a victory in Germany within the WRC 2 category. Nevertheless, a puncture during Saturday’s speed test in the military area at Panzerplatte left them in second place for the race.

That’s the way it goes in rallying. From there on, we concentrated on holding onto second place and we looked upon the rest of the rally as extra training for the upcoming Barum Rally

“That’s the way it goes in rallying,” remarked Jan Kopecký about the race. “From there on, we concentrated on holding onto second place and we looked upon the rest of the rally as extra training for the upcoming Barum Rally.”

The Tidemand/Andersson duo also had to deal with a puncture, which meant crossing the finish line in third place for their category. Even so, they still had plenty of points to begin celebrating the World Championship title for category WRC 2. You can take a look at a video of the celebrations here:

After the puncture on Saturday, we felt like we were in a place all by ourselves. Jan was well ahead of us and at the same time we had a comfortable lead on the fourth car in category WRC 2

“After the puncture on Saturday,” Pontus Tidemand explained, “we felt like we were in a place all by ourselves. Jan was well ahead of us and at the same time we had a comfortable lead on the fourth car in category WRC 2.”

The pretty badly damaged car was taken into service Saturday evening, but the well-coordinated team of mechanics managed to completely repair the ŠKODA FABIA R5 within the 30-minute limit, and in the final minutes they even found enough time to give the car a good cleaning so that it left to the parking place for the night in perfect condition. Take a look at the excellent organizational work of the ŠKODA Motorsport mechanics in this video:

Joining in the celebration of the ŠKODA Motorsport team’s success was Christian Strube, the member of the board of directors at ŠKODA responsible for technical development. He concluded the press conference by thanking the entire ŠKODA Motorsport team for its excellent work throughout the season.

Michal Hrabánek, the head of ŠKODA Motorsport, was satisfied with the performance of the drivers and with the excellent work of the entire team: “I’m proud and happy for the whole team. Pontus and Jonas really earned the title. So did our ŠKODA FABIA R5, more than 150 of which have already been sold, clearly demonstrating that this is the best rally car in its category.”
