Powerful natural forces created thousands of lakes in the Alps and their surrounding regions. All of them are beautiful, but only a select few have become true icons. One of them is Lake Como in the Italian region of Lombardy, approximately 50 kilometres from Milan. Covering an area of 146 km², it is Italy’s third-largest lake and, with a depth of more than 400 metres, one of the deepest in Europe. However, its appeal lies in far more than impressive statistics.

The most spectacular views of the lake are from the deck of a boat or ferry.

Lake Como offers a unique microclimate. Massive Alpine mountain ranges rise steeply from the water in several locations, shielding the valleys from cold northern winds. As a result, winters are mild and, during summer, the water reaches pleasantly warm temperatures suitable for swimming. The surrounding mountains also add to the area's charm and are exceptionally photogenic. It is therefore no surprise that many visitors prefer the local beaches even to the seaside.

Driving enthusiasts will encounter plenty of sharp turns, but the roads themselves are often very narrow. For a more rewarding driving experience, the surrounding Alpine passes are generally a better choice.

Villa d’Este is one of the most luxurious destinations around the lake. Every year, it hosts the world’s most famous and prestigious classic and concept car shows.

Villa Carlotta, dating from the 17th century, houses valuable art collections and is surrounded by a renowned 8-hectare botanical garden. Rhododendron enthusiasts are in for a treat.

Villa Monastero dates back to the 12th century and originally served as a convent. It was later transformed into a noble residence. Its narrow botanical garden stretches for almost two kilometres along the lakeshore.

Villa Melzi is a private residence whose interiors are not open to the public. Visitors can, however, enjoy a walk through its gardens, which feature a wide variety of exotic trees.

The lake is home not only to elegant villas but also to impressive museums and monuments. This memorial commemorates the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta, inventor of the electric battery.

While travelling along the lakeside roads, you will encounter dozens of monumental buildings. Among the most famous is Villa del Balbianello, situated on a peninsula near the town of Lenno. It is memorable not only for lovers of architecture and botany but also for film enthusiasts. It was here that Anakin Skywalker kissed Padmé in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. The villa also appears in the James Bond film Casino Royale, where Bond recuperates from his injuries.

Perched on a hill above the town of Varenna stands the ruin of Castello di Vezio. The views of the lake from its carefully maintained gardens are truly unforgettable.

Some one-way roads are barely wider than a single vehicle. Keep a close eye on your wing mirrors.

No special application or registration is required to use the ferries. Simply purchase a ticket at the kiosk and wait for the next vessel travelling in your chosen direction.

Seaplanes are also an inseparable part of Lake Como’s identity. The local flying club is the oldest seaplane club in Europe, having been founded in 1930.
