Škoda Auto has created sustainable offices of the future in Prague’s AFI City Tower. The innovative, multifunctional spaces on the 17th floor stand out for their organically structured layout, with carefully planned zones tailored to different ways of working, imaginative use of circular-economy principles and inspiration drawn from nature. The interior features recycled and recyclable materials, elements repurposed from vehicles, 3D-printed details and modern audiovisual technology. Together, these sustainable offices create an atmosphere that sparks creativity, encourages collaboration and provides a springboard for bold new ideas.

Sustainable design

AFI_2025_0396-a_d740a44c.JPG

Sustainability is not just about the materials used, but primarily about design. That is why, at Škoda Auto, we focus on timeless design with long-term value that is not driven by passing trends. Workspaces created on these principles will retain their functionality and appeal for decades. Our sustainable design philosophy is built on three pillars:

Traditional materials

The timeless nature of the design is underpinned by traditional, high-quality materials. For example, metal and glass make our multifunctional office spaces not only robust and durable but also elegant. Wood helps to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere; it has been used for the tops of work and meeting tables as well as other parts of the interior.

Using recycled materials

By using recycled and recyclable materials, we minimise the need for new raw materials. For example, the chairs in the Agora Auditorium use textiles made from recycled fishing nets; the carpets are produced from recycled office carpeting; and the kitchen worktop surfaces are made from polystyrene recycled from waste generated in the production of cars and household appliances.

New technologies

New technologies also help to deliver sustainability and longevity across the multifunctional office floor. For instance, a range of interior elements were produced using 3D printing, with recycled and recyclable materials used as part of the process. These distinctive details demonstrate how sustainability can be combined with creativity, without compromising on quality.

Flexible spaces

To ensure the sustainable office spaces meet employees’ diverse needs, the design places strong emphasis on flexibility and on the functional versatility of each room. As a result, everyone can find the ideal place for their needs and day-to-day tasks – each part of the multifunctional floor serves a different purpose, creating a distinct environment for every phase of a project. This has created a natural journey through the space that mirrors the thinking process and offers teams and individuals the right conditions for high-quality, sustainable work.

The partially enclosed Cave Room is ideal for generating ideas and shaping the first outlines. The harmonious Nest Room inspires further development, helping initial thoughts evolve into a fully formed concept. The Oracle Room enables ideas and concepts to be refined into their final form, while the Agora Auditorium is used to present them.

The Agora Auditorium combines an impressive setting and modern facilities with a beautiful view, making it the ideal place to present and share ideas with a larger audience.

Biophilic design

AFI_2025_0305-a_878d716b

Biophilic design is an approach to interior design that integrates natural elements, motifs and forms to create a harmonious working environment. In Škoda Auto’s multifunctional spaces, the biophilic concept draws inspiration from urban parks, reflected in the natural materials and greenery used, earthy colours and the interplay of light. As a result, the office floor has a positive effect on the mental and physical wellbeing of employees and visitors.

The overall impression of these distinctive multifunctional offices is further enhanced by a soundscape concept. This serves not only to separate areas acoustically, but also to build a positive connection with the space by creating an inspiring, relaxing atmosphere.

The soundscapes complement the visual and physical zoning created through plant walls, screens made from stamped parts and slats produced using 3D printing. Sound levels adapt to the occupancy of each area, increasing the effectiveness of the acoustic isolation. For example, birdsong can be heard in the innovative Nest Room; a ‘distant city’ sound is used in the section with futuristic architecture; and pleasant music plays in the work café and other Relax zones.

3D-printed elements

Every corner of the multifunctional floor at AFI City Tower features elements produced using 3D printing, which is one of the central tools in Škoda Auto’s approach to sustainable interior design. These distinctive details, which complement the office spaces, were printed from a durable, waterproof material made from recycled old furniture and cellulose.

Furniture, ceiling features, space dividers and other interior elements were produced using 3D printing from this sustainable material. These include, for example, sofa frames and table bases in the work café, ceiling features with both visual and acoustic functions, and planters in an organic design.

Crystal Eyes

As you enter the floor, you are greeted by the unique Crystal Eyes light installation, made up of 50 LED Matrix beam headlights from the current fourth-generation Škoda Superb. To create the light animations, the control unit of each headlamp was reprogrammed by a team of specialists from Škoda’s vehicle lighting development department and external experts, led by Jaroslav Kyselý. A central lighting system controls the installation and also enables new animations and lighting scenes, which can be synchronised with ambient music.

Of the six primary functions the headlights perform in the vehicle (daytime running lights, position lights, dipped beam, Matrix high beam, fog lights and indicators), three are used for the Crystal Eyes animations: daytime running lights, dipped beam and indicators. The dipped-beam function is particularly striking, as it highlights the blue Crystallinium element. However, the intensity of the dipped beam had to be reduced to a minimum to avoid dazzling people passing by. The installation is completed by a creative frame around the headlights, produced using 3D printing from recycled material.

Škoda vehicle components

Alongside recycled and recyclable materials, the multifunctional floor also makes use of waste generated during the production of Škoda vehicles. This serves as a reminder that sustainability and creativity can reinforce each other. The main items used were so-called non-conforming parts, which had been removed from the production process for various reasons. They are complemented by conforming parts that met production standards, but were selected for the multifunctional floor for decorative purposes.

Škoda vehicle components feature in the futuristically designed part of the floor, where we have brought an ‘automotive spirit’ into the space. Stamped metal panels from side sections, bonnets, rear doors and roofs are used to divide the area, while ceiling features are enhanced with seat belts from the Elroq. Vehicle parts – particularly textiles – are also used elsewhere. For example, the walls of the smallest meeting pod are covered with airbag fabric, while in the Cave meeting room, both the walls and sofas are upholstered in seat fabric from vehicles.

Refurbished furniture

Refurbished furniture is an integral part of the innovative spaces on the multifunctional floor of AFI City Tower, clearly reflecting the essence of our approach to sustainability. Instead of disposing of them, we chose to give old and damaged chairs a new lease of life, demonstrating respect both for the original craftsmanship and for the environment.

We removed the damaged chrome finish from the aluminium frames of these iconic chairs and fully refurbished the worn upholstery. In doing so, we restored the chairs’ authentic appearance, elegance and comfort. After this ‘revitalising treatment’, they now help complete the balanced aesthetic of the office spaces – without needing to buy new furniture.

Audiovisual technology

A responsible approach to nature and the latest technological solutions can go hand in hand. The modern audiovisual equipment installed throughout the multifunctional floor at AFI City Tower is proof of that. Just like recyclable materials, technology can be designed with the future in mind. It is also clear that modern technology is essential to an efficient, productive workflow today.

A prime example is the Agora Auditorium, where a 9.6-metre-wide, 2.7-metre-high LED wall immediately catches the eye. The space is also equipped with microphone sets, ceiling speakers and the necessary control system for the audiovisual technology. In the Agora Auditorium, every presentation becomes part of the space itself – making it engaging and memorable.
