Meet the Peaq: Spacious inside and out

The large all-electric Škoda Peaq SUV will soon be revealed in all its glory. Ahead of that, however, you can already explore some of the details of this upcoming model. Take a closer look at what the vehicle’s dimensions mean for interior space as well as its overall appearance.

The Peaq is the largest vehicle in the Škoda line-up, being almost 22 centimetres longer than the Enyaq electric model and nearly 12 centimetres longer than the traditional Kodiaq SUV. Like the latter, the Peaq will offer seating for up to seven occupants. Not only due to its length, the vehicle provides a record level of interior space.

As is traditionally the case for the brand, the aim of Škoda’s engineers and designers was to create a vehicle offering the greatest interior space in its class. This is achieved not only by the vehicle’s overall length, but also by the interior architecture, layout, and exterior proportions.

For example, the Peaq wheelbase is more than 17 centimetres longer than that of the Kodiaq, which is also available as a seven-seater, making it one of the longest, the MEB platform allows. The overall height is also greater, exceeding that of its electric sibling, the Enyaq, by 4 centimetres.

“The objective was to create one of the most spacious vehicles in its segment. This is one of the core values of the Škoda brand,” says Concept Coordinator Miroslav Špalek. According to him, the engineering and design teams worked from the fixed wheelbase of the platform and were able to maximise space by utilising the front and rear body overhangs. This potential was used to full effect. “We started with the front seats. The seating position is higher and closer to the steering wheel,” Špalek explains. Among other benefits, this increases the available space in the rear seats and allows for greater comfort for passengers in the third row.

The engineers then refined this interior concept in cooperation with designers, including exterior specialists. They wrapped the spacious interior in an elegant exterior form. While the Peaq is intended to visually communicate its generous space and, as the brand’s largest model, project a sense of presence, it must also remain elegant.

The designers achieved this through several clever solutions. “To achieve an elegant appearance for such a large vehicle, it is necessary to visually elongate its lines. This is ensured, for example, by the tornado line, which connects the front and rear of the vehicle,” says designer Baptiste de Brugiere. The aerodynamic shape of the roof also contributes to this elongated appearance.

This visual elongation also creates the impression that the vehicle is lower than its actual dimensions suggest. Designers have further emphasised this effect through the contrast between the pronounced side surfaces and the relatively low glazing. The aforementioned tornado line also comes into play here. “Its form in the area of the wheel arches visually reduces the perceived volume of the body around the wheels and helps to position the vehicle more naturally on its wheels,” the designer explains, describing another method used to achieve a visually lower stance.
