Simply Clever solutions have been a hallmark of the Škoda brand for decades. At the same time, Škoda has been actively using 3D printing in a range of projects since 1997. Now, the carmaker is bringing these two worlds together. It has published an extensive collection of accessories on Printables.com/@Skoda. Škoda is the first carmaker in the world to offer something of this kind.

Customers can choose an item that meets their specific needs and suits their car, then print it in their preferred colour. This allows them to upgrade their car with virtually no waiting time. The digital files including the print data are also free of charge: Škoda makes them available to its customers at no cost. The only expense involved in printing an accessory is the cost of running the printer itself.

 3D printing at Škoda Auto

Škoda Auto has been using 3D printing for almost 30 years, having established its first 3D printing facility in 1997. The technology is used successfully, particularly in vehicle development. The carmaker also allows enthusiasts to 3D-print their own car models, as well as various themed accessories. Both are available on the Printables.com platform. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the specialised facility focused on 3D-printing respirators.

Carefully Designed

Škoda has taken the same care in designing accessories that customers can print at home as it does with its official accessories, available, for example, through its online shop or from Škoda dealers. The accessories were developed by specialists from the carmaker’s innovation incubator in cooperation with the User Experience department and other teams.

“I greatly appreciate the cross-company collaboration that made the Printly Clever® accessories possible,” says Iveta Stejskalová from Škoda’s innovation incubator. She continues: “Thanks to the enthusiasm of all our colleagues, we have been able to put together a diverse range of Printly Clever® items that our customers can print themselves, allowing them to customize their cars even more closely to their own needs.” She also promises that the portfolio of 3D-printable models will continue to expand.

Škoda places great emphasis on ease of use and personalisation. Most of the solutions make use of existing storage spaces and require no modifications to the car itself. This also means that, provided all the recommendations are followed, the 3D-printed items will work reliably and bring customers both enjoyment and practical benefits.

Universal and Model-specific Solutions

Some solutions can be used in almost any Škoda car, including older models, while others are designed specifically for individual models. Universal items include a cable holder for the pockets on the backs of the seats, a frame that prevents a phone from moving around in a storage compartment, a coin holder that fits into a cup holder, and a hook that attaches to an unused Top Tether anchorage point on the back of the rear seats. “The 3D-printing community appreciates the fact that many of these universal items also fit other vehicles within the Volkswagen Group,” says Stejskalová.

Among the solutions designed for specific models are organisers for the centre consoles of the Epiq, Peaq and Fabia. The Epiq also has an insert for the Jumbo Box between the front seats and an organiser set for the cup holder. Owners of the Peaq can expand the functionality of its folding table with practical clips.

“In some cases, these are items that the community has specifically requested,” says Iveta Stejskalová, noting that user feedback helps the carmaker decide which Printly Clever® items to develop.
