Engines and chassis: First CNG drive in a ŠKODA SUV

The ŠKODA KAMIQ comes with a choice of five different engines offering power outputs that range from 66 kW (90 PS) to 110 kW (150 PS). Customers can choose between three petrol versions, one diesel or – as a first in ŠKODA’s SUV family – a 1.0 G-TEC. This efficient and low emission engine, which will follow in the fourth quarter of 2019, runs on compressed natural gas (CNG). The chassis with an increased ground clearance was developed specifically for the new city SUV; Sport Chassis Control is available as an option.

Christian Strube, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Technical Development, said, “Although the ŠKODA KAMIQ’s petrol and diesel engines already demonstrate excellent consumption, we still opted to offer the even more eco-friendly 1.0 G-TEC. We are therefore producing the first ŠKODA SUV to run on efficient CNG.”

The portfolio of engines available for the ŠKODA KAMIQ comprises five modern and efficient versions with direct injection and turbocharging. They all come with brake energy recovery as well as Stop/Start technology and comply with the current Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard. The new city SUV’s top‑end engine is the four-cylinder 1.5 TSI with a power output of 110 kW (150 PS). Its Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) automatically shuts down two cylinders when the load is light, thus saving on fuel. Just like both of the three-cylinder 1.0 TSIs, the 1.5 TSI is fitted with a petrol particulate filter. The CNG variant of the three-cylinder 1.0 G-TEC delivering 66 kW (90 PS) is the first engine in a ŠKODA SUV to run on natural gas. When running on CNG, the engine generates lower CO2 and NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. In terms of diesels, customers are offered the four-cylinder 1.6 TDI, which delivers 85 kW (115 PS) and is fitted with an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection as well as a diesel particulate filter. As standard, all engines come with a 6-speed manual gearbox (5-speed for the 1.0 TSI outputting 70 kW / 95 PS). A 7-speed DSG is available as an option for all versions with power outputs of 85 kW (115 PS) or more.

Newly developed chassis with the largest ground clearance in the segment

For the brand’s first city SUV based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0 platform, ŠKODA has developed a new chassis that combines the advantages of an SUV with the agile driving characteristics of a compact car. In comparison to the ŠKODA SCALA, which is based on the same platform, the KAMIQ has longer springs and shock absorbers, a stiffer stabiliser for the front axle, a reinforced rear axle, larger wheels and power steering with a different gear ratio. As a result, the KAMIQ’s ground clearance has increased by a total of 39 mm in comparison to the SCALA, 10 mm of which stem from the tyres with a larger cross section and the rest from the new chassis geometry. With a total ground clearance of 188 mm, the ŠKODA KAMIQ is setting a new benchmark in the city SUV segment.


For the KAMIQ’s front axle, ŠKODA has made use of a MacPherson strut design. In addition to longer springs, new longer hydraulic shock absorbers are used too. This ensures great damping even at maximum spring deflection. The front wheel-bearing pin assembly has been strengthened and now features a revised geometry to withstand an increased load. The rear torsion-beam axle with trailing arms uses hydraulic dampers and features longer springs and dampers. In order to accommodate the larger wheels, the rear axle has been reinforced and has lower mounting points.

The wheels for the KAMIQ have a minimum diameter of 16 inches as well as sports tyres that are wider and have a taller profile than those used for the SCALA. The tyre dimensions for the new city SUV are 205/60 R16 and 205/55 R17 as well as 215/45 R18 for the 18-inch alloys. The chassis and steering ensure that, despite the KAMIQ’s high centre of gravity, the car is agile, corners well and offers a high level of comfort. The rear axle’s higher level of torsional stiffness effectively prevents body roll.

Optional Sport Chassis Control with two settings

For those who like to drive particularly dynamically, the KAMIQ offers Sport Chassis Control as an option. This sporty chassis lowers the car by 10 mm and has two different set-ups: Normal and Sport – the latter of which adapts the electronically adjustable shock absorbers to operate with firmer characteristics. These two set-ups can be configured in the menu for Driving Mode Select, which is provided in combination with Sport Chassis Control and offers a choice of four modes: Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual. The chosen setting affects the responsiveness of the electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering as well as of the engine and gearbox.

For even better safety on rougher roads, underbody protection is available for the ŠKODA KAMIQ as an optional extra. This consists of fibreglass-reinforced thermoplastic covers that protect the engine and transmission from damage caused by bumps or poor road conditions. As standard, the engine bay already comes clad in the same material to improve aerodynamics.
